Natural History Information

Range and Habitat

Native range includes northeast China, Korea and southeast Russia. Inhabit lowland forests, open meadows, river valleys and swampy bushlands. Breeds in slow moving streams, pools, paddy fields and ditches.

Physical Description

Back coloration varies from brownish gray to bright green with large dark spots. Belly color varies from yellow to red also with dark spots. ~1.5″-2″. Eyes have triangular pupils.

Life Cycle

 

Behavior

Diurnal during warmer weather. Hibernates from October through May, often in a group of up to 6 toads. When threatened fire-bellied toads raise up on their hind feet to show off the bright warning coloration of their belly.

Threats and Conservation Status

Populations are declining due to habitat loss and traditional medicinal use but they are listed as IUCN Least Concern due to their wide distribution.
